There are "unresolved issues" remaining

Paradox Interactive has made the decision to push the console versions of Cities: Skylines 2 even further back — likely into 2025 — in order to meet the stability and performance targets it has set for itself. Detailed in a post on the studio's forums, it's revealed the developer was aiming for an October 2024 release window, but it still has "unresolved issues impacting the game in ways that harm the player experience".

The city builder originally debuted on PC in late 2023, but the launch was marred by considerable performance flaws on the platform. It's said to be in a better place now, letting Paradox Interactive turn some of its attention to the previously announced PS5 version. The company says it will look to issue a new release window next month following a "thorough [internal] review". It continues: "This evaluation will determine whether we can begin the submission process and provide a solid release date, or if further issues need to be addressed."

Performance problems aside, Cities: Skylines 2 looks to introduce a long list of new features over the base game, which went down a treat on PS4. There'll be new road tools and an advanced traffic AI system to steer the cars using them, as well as city services, extra public transportation options, and different climates to build your dream city in. While these new mechanic enhanced the overall experience, they were lost amongst the issues that plagued the PC version.

Paradox Interactive now appears to be taking its time to make sure the PS5 version doesn't release in the same state. "We understand this is disappointing, and it’s not what we had hoped for either. However, we are committed to keeping you informed throughout this development process, even if the updates aren’t always what we’d like," the studio then explained.

Have you been waiting on the PS5 version of Cities: Skylines 2? Keep the plans for your dream city cooking in your head for now while teasing them in the comments below.

About Liam Croft

Cities: Skylines 2 PS5 Delayed Further to Meet Stability, Performance Aims (2)

Liam grew up with a PlayStation controller in his hands and a love for Metal Gear Solid. Nowadays, he can be found playing the latest and greatest PS5 games as well as supporting Derby County. That last detail is his downfall.

Damn shame. I’ve seen the reviews on steam and they are not glowing put it that way. Think I’ll be giving this a miss sorry paradox

Considering this is the company that refused to give disc owners of CS1 a free PS5 upgrade, (as the did for digital owners) as they thought it would enable you to pass the disc around and give everyone a free copy of the game (they didn't know you still need the original disc to play) it doesn't surprise me they can't get to grips with PS5 development.

When I saw this game announced I was shocked at how quickly it was coming out. Now I know why it was rushed.

What a shame. This game now has a bad rep and I can't see many, including me, dishing out full price for it.
It's a shame as I enjoyed the last one, but quite frankly, the changes made are not that revolutionary and given the issues, I'll choose to stick with the old game, or simply not bother.

@BiosNova you want to say, that people need to insert PS4 disc into PS5 console to play PS5 version of Cities Skylines?

@REALAIS yeah usually when you have a PS4 disc copy and get a free upgrade to PS5, you need to insert your PS4 disc still to play the PS5 upgrade

Disappointing news. All excitement I had had long gone. Assuming they get it right and deliver eventually I'm sure I'll play, but after the initial last minute delay and now this I have moved on until there is anything definite and reviewed as being stable.

I had this preordered and they delayed it by 6 months a week before release, and now again.
I really don’t think we’ll see it running smoothly on PS5, they overextended themselves.

I cancelled my preorder and went back to Cities 1 (PS5 remaster) I know what I'm getting, have all the DLC from the PS4 version and I know it works and it does everything I need from a city builder. Cities 2 will always have the stigma of a broken and delayed game for me, not to mention a lot of what is currently in Cities 1, is missing from Cities 2. I'll pass...
