I can't believe the prices, this whole group, or a similar one, closed at $129 not too long ago

Editz04-21-09 11:26 AM

Is this considered a collector's bike?

riva04-21-09 11:49 AM

For a collector of bikes worth 15x less than that asking price maybe..

I love the Grant Peterson archaeology to justify asking more than an RB-1 in gorgeous shape would cost.....for a crap-tacular Kabuki. Good luck.....

Obviously special with the panto'd SR, but wow, you'd think a little more effort would go into the listing! What is that, a 55cm?

cb400bill04-21-09 05:20 PM

Another of those Cheeto's bikes has appeared. This one is still in the carton.

Yeah - but that's where you can score. Worst case, it's not the right size and can easily be flipped. Seller has 100% feedback, and shipping to me is only $25. I'm just not in a position to snag it. I'm also not a Gios expert (but that is a 4-hole Campagnolo front derailleur). I'd guess the size is 56, give or take. I'll bet a bunch of questions as to the size have been emailed to the seller - first one that's right will end the listing.
Seller added the size: 22" (FWIW).

Could that be a hijacked account? Would someone who owns this bike truly list it in inches?

I think it's legit. Seller doesn't generally deal in bikes - maybe selling for a buddy.

Right? The listing sucks. As far as I can tell the only true SR parts are the crankset (worn rings), RD, pedals and seatpost. From the pics its impossible to tell if the brakes and FD are SR. Everything else is shared with NR.

older men's ciocc bike - $100

ciocc bike built in italy. was told the bike is about a 54cm size. dont know much about cycling but looks to be in great shape with all original campanyolo parts. bought at storage sale but my son has no interest. make offer. i work nights so im up late call any time

There's a phone number listed, but it's the wrong number. Poor guy's probably had 50 calls already. Oh well!

Tigerprawn04-21-09 08:28 PM

I'd try variations of that number. I've scored a few times like that when sellers mistype their phone numbers. Heck I've done it!

720-227-2111 could be a common mistake of hitting two many numbers close together.

720-227-2211
720-227-1111

It's worth a shot. Worse case you bother someone during dinner for a few seconds :)

"i work nights so im up late call any time" - sounds like the 'seller' is screwing with someone.

Good point... But I think I would still attempt to call. As obvious as it may be I still have that slight glimmer of hope that it's real :). Too bad I'm not in Denver.

I love the editing the seller has done to Sheldon Brown's article. The most glaring is removing "late" from in front of 80s, implying that Grant Peterson actually had something to do with building the 1982 Kabuki. That ad borders on fraud.

You're right, and how about this winning line:

"Kabuki, later became Bridgestone "road" bikes, particularly the legendary RB-1, combine frame design taken
from classic Italian road bikes of the '70's with excellent Japanese workmanship and functional, reliable parts."

as an interpretation of the original:

"Bridgestone "road" bikes, particularly the legendary RB-1, combine frame design taken from classic Italian road bikes of the '70's with excellent Japanese workmanship and functional, reliable parts."

His version isn't even grammatical - it makes no sense. Worse than the twisted plagiarism found in the writing of freshman comp students!

Trek-o-philes may be interested in this one. An '83 760 if I'm reading the S/N right. Looks to be in okay shape, but the bottom bracket is marked "60TSI", which according to vintage-trek.com:

Some early and mid 80s bottom brackets were marked with 58TSI or 60TSI. In the early 1980s Tim S. Issac designed new lugs and and a new bottom bracket shell for Trek. The new bottom bracket shell is typically marked with 58TSI (or more rarely, 60TSI). This designation is not part of the serial number but is a model number of the shell. The TSI are Tim's initials. The 58 or 60 refer to the angle between the seattube and the downtube.

http://www.vintage-trek.com/SerialNumbers.htm

I'd suggest local pickup from the seller. I recently took delivery of a bike from him, and although he did a decent job of protecting the frame from the various loose parts, the box had a gaping hole in it, the fork dropouts weren't braced, and paint wasn't protected by much material.

Actually, the pedals are likely SL, not SR.
To me, the headset looks like SR. (?)
The FD is the (relatively valuable) four-hole version which would have been included in the SR groupset during the brief period it was produced. The calipers appear to be correct for the SR group as well. So the only thing we don't know about are the brake levers. If those happen to be panto, the NR rather than SR would add value. I don't see anything that would NOT have been correct on a basically SR (reduced) panto bike circa 1978-9.
Sometimes, a sucky listing is your friend, though not if you're risk averse. Admittedly, many folks are. IMO, the bike was a good deal at its initial listing price, assuming the brake levers are at least Campagnolo, which I think is a good bet. The panto parts (and I do like the way the inner ring is painted in) add some value. The stem and saddle are at least nice, period bits. It has been relisted with a higher BIN and higher shipping.
If it was the right size, I think it was worth buying. To take better pics and resell, perhaps not a slam-dunk. Gios's just don't command really high prices, except for the very best examples. Then again, I'm far from a Gios expert. Had I been looking for one, I could have found a couple of examples within the past year or so that have sold cheaply.
Edit: Forgot to say, the color obviously doesn't help it either - most folks want the iconic blue. Personally, I prefer the white.

The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the minimum bid or reserve amount.
