A quick visit to Tamimi today, just outside of our compound. There’s a convenience branch of this (Tamimi Express) inside our compound too. * Bottled water is widely sold as the tap water here isn’t drinkable. However, recycling isn’t widely available (for anything, not just plastic bottles). Hopefully this will change in the future.* Dates form part of the fresh produce aisles here; they’re widely eaten with Arabic coffee and are delicious! They’re even more popular during Ramadan as a good source of energy to break the fast.* Sainsbury’s products are available here. I’ve also seen Morrisons products in other retailers.* Most produce is either sold loose, or in clingfilmed trays. Produce has to be weighed at the counter (and put in a plastic bag) before you go to the checkout. * There’s always a deli style counter for loose nuts and dried fruit, with a lot more varieties than are available in the UK (dried pomelo anyone?)* Signs are in English and Arabic.* The Brussels sprouts in the photo are 26 SAR, which is about £5.50!!

Saw this brand today in our local Danube, called ‘Noug’. The branding and zoning was really effective; clean, simple and modern with a neutral colour palate which is really appealing.Unsurprisingly, camels 🐫 are big business in the desert, and not just for camel riding! Their meat is eaten (most often in the national dish called Khabsa, which is very nice and I’d liken it most to beef). The milk is used to produce various dairy products; laban, flavoured milk and cheese. I’ve not tried it yet, but the flavours look quite adventurous!

44 degrees outside (and will be this heat and above daily until September now) and these are for sale in our local Danube… I think the marketing and ranging here could be a bit more targeted to say the least!!

Panda Hypermarket, Riyadh Gallery…* There are so many different products in produce that aren’t available in UK supermarkets: long green pumpkin, arvy, gabi root and tapioca* Brands are king, with zoned areas around the store and within aisles. Even Heinz do it to increase brand awareness within the 30+ other brands of ketchup on offer! * Rockit apples are probably the best example of branded produce I’ve seen, with clear POS and stand-out packaging, along with their slogan ‘Rockit everyday’* The icecream freezers are unique here; every brand has its own freezer!* Cadbury’s chocolate is well known here, but it is definitely not the same!!

Carrefour, Granada Mall, Riyadh…* All about the brands, and most of the Saudi brands have the same blue colour for their logos (any insight as to why is most welcome!)* So much fresh produce from all over the globe, mainly sold loose or in over-wrapped trays* Most meat is sold through deli counters: camel, beef, rabbit, lamb… all parts of the animal are sold (not going to post pics!)* Range rationalisation is definitely not a thing here; there are so many types/varieties of everything!

Another day, another Riyadh supermarket… this time a small M&S in Granada Mall (one of the biggest malls here). * No fresh produce or meat* Zoned areas to cater for different dietary requirements and cuisines* Specific Eid products* Ultimately a key focus on British products* M&S cafe next door (closed during the day due to Ramadan)* Fresh bread imported from the UK, with an Arabic label over it (the medium loaf in the photo is about £3)

Anyone who knows me knows I love a trip to a supermarket when I’m abroad… so now that we’re living in Riyadh, here’s a few pics and observations from our local Danube…* Everything is branded, including all MFP and produce* The shelves are immaculately presented and faced up, and are very tall!* Produce imports come from ALL over the world… from the USA to Australia and almost everywhere in between* Much like the UK post-HFSS, brand zoning within aisles is a BIG thing* My 5yr old daughter is very pleased they sell Pringles!!

Spotted this morning:Turnips at 53p per unit Good for customer choice, good for crop utilisation, but I can’t help but feel that pricing per kg would work better for this line…
